Winter Solstice DC Elapsed Time - Who cares? Avg Speed: Yeap Time in stops: Absolutely

Who's Counting?

Bored to tears, desperate to go for a 200 mile jaunt with lots of nice folks and limited rest stops, one every 50 miles, then the WSDC is for you! Sub-Zero temps for the 0500 start, the thickest frost I've seen in nearly 30 years living here, the scent of skunk throughout much of the first 50 miles and sun that warmed us up eventually. The Bikeaholics were kind enough to take a donation of 10 dozen "prototype" energy bars, which were well received by riders. Thank you.

SFR 200k Brevet Elapsed Time: 8:58 Avg Speed: 13.86 mph Time in stops:

A challenging ride starting and finishing crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. What more can one ask for a scenery & history? The route passes through urban Marin County out to the Pt. Reyes National Seashore and Pt. Reyes lighthouse, then around Tomales Bay and back. Very tough climbs that surprise and headwinds.

2/19/05

Butterfield Double Fini: #49 - 111 Elapsed Time: 15:31 Avg Speed: 13.73 mph Time in stops: 41' 20"

8,200

aka Butterflood for the monsoon rains, gale winds, hail, washed out roads, generally awful conditions that saw fewer the 90 riders finish from an entry of more than 200! Enjoyed using our prototype rain pants through the worst of the morning gale. Devoted an extra hour to coax a charming first time dc rider home. We managed a wrong turn which had us log full 200 miles after such a day!

1/29/05

SFR 300k Brevet Elapsed Time: 14:05 Avg Speed: 13.24 mph Time in stops:

A challenging ride starting and finishing crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. The route passed through scenic Marin and Sonoma County ranch and wine country bringing us home along spectacular sections of Pacific Coast Highway. Just makes a person want to go on a long bike ride!

3/05/05

Death Valley Spring Double Fini: #31 - 145 Elapsed Time: 13:22 Avg Speed: 14.63 mph Time in stops: 43' 30"

9,100

Entrants were treated to a 100 year wildflower blossom, green landscape, snow covered mountains, and canoes in a five mile lake at Badwater! We were compelled to ride the Southern route because the First lady was in the park to the north enjoying the spring blossom. See photos: http://www.pbase.com/g2_steve/2005_mm

3/26/05

Solvang Double Fini: #16? - 474 Elapsed Time: 11:18 Avg Speed: 19.11 mph Time in stops: 50' 49"

6,800

Lush green rolling country roads, picture perfect weather, a very large starting field of 500+ leaving at will between 4:30-7:30 made for a wonderful day of cycling companionship. I spent the afternoon trying to stay ahead of the powerful Utah group who's company I enjoying midday. The first test of our proprietary Athletic Nutrition Package.

4/09/05

Hemet DC Fini: #15 - 161 Elapsed Time: 12:12 Avg Speed: 17.44 mph Time in stops: 43' 31"

5,800

A near picture perfect day for cycling with annoying winds during the afternoon. Urban sprawl is overtaking this region of Southern California at an alarming rate. One can only wonder how this will effect the route in year's to come? Another successful day due to our new Athletic Nutrition Package.

4/16/05

Mulholland Double Fini: #24 - 145 Elapsed Time: 14:42 Avg Speed: 14.62 mph Time in stops: 53' 28"

16,500

This may go down as the toughest double of the year due to course changes because of road closures to Ojai. The climbing was tough and relentless with 80° heat in the afternoon. Riders were seen prone on the road edge, too exhausted to move 10' to nap in shade! The attrition rate was high. Another successful day due to our new Athletic Nutrition Package. 2005 California Triple Crown Stage Race Double

4/30/05

Devil Mountain Double Fini: #57 - 150 Elapsed Time: 16:44 Avg Speed: 12.30 mph Time in stops: 67' 54"

18,800

Extremely tough California Double. This ride is about survival for many of us. It traverses the two highest paved peaks at opposite ends of Bay Area with tough climbs in between!! My ride was about survival and completion after Mt Diablo made clear a problem with tendonitis. Cool weather helped everyone no doubt. Breathtaking rural beauty so close to metropolitan sprawl never fails to amaze. 2005 California Triple Crown Stage Race Double

DBC 400k Brevet Elapsed Time: 15:57 Avg Speed: 15.59 mph

Very little!

This first half of this course previews the Gold Rush Randonnee. The Davis Bike Club 1200k. The 400k featured flat roads, little rollers, and plenty of headwinds. Even though this was a circle route, the headwinds managed to find riders going out and back. The route passed through beautiful farm country on a beautiful day. Our Athletic Nutrition Package kept me moving while other riders stopped in restaurants.

5/14/05

Central Coast Double Fini: # 61 - 112 Elapsed Time: 15:56 Avg Speed: 13.39 mph Time in stops: 84' 55"

13,700

Something about this day... It was much tougher than last year. Strong headwinds riding up the coast from Cambria, heat coupled to strong winds once over Nacimiento-Ferguson Grade into Ft Hunter Liggett took a toll. There was no hope of bettering last years time, only a strong desire to FINISH. Congratulations to Stage Race competitors. Our Athletic Nutrition Package worked for me, other conditions against me! 2005 California Triple Crown Stage Race Double

5/21/05

Davis Double Fini: Not an issue. Elapsed Time: 13:04 Avg Speed: 15.35 mph Time in stops: 79' 24"

7,300

A near picture perfect day for cycling with the usual large turn out of nearly 1,000 riders. Plenty of friendly folks and friends to meet & visit with during the day. Temps in the 70s with light breezes, perhaps only one section of nagging heads & cross winds for the northern leg. Temps in the 80s to the finish. Sunny. This is a fun course with a little bit of every terrain type, not too much of anything leg breaking, super well supported.

5/28/05

Heartbreak Double Fini: # 35 - 70 Elapsed Time: 15:24 Avg Speed: 13.06 mph Time in stops: 84' 53"

15,200

Considering the proximately to Los Angeles' urban sprawl, it is difficult to imagine the remote scenic beauty this course traverses from high desert scrub to fragrant alpine forests that included visible snow pack and raging mountain rivers crossing the road at various places this year. Patellar tendonitis successfully slowed my pace in recent weeks, which successfully introduced me to an entirely new group of cyclists. A delight indeed!

Cedar Valley, IA 600k Brevet Distance: 303 miles (dnf) Elapsed Time: 32:17 Avg Speed: 13.2 mph

22,000

The glaciers, later the Mississippi River cut some steep gradients, long climbs, BIG rollers in this region. BEWARE. Coupled to intense heat, humidity, and less than perfect gear selection, I suffered intense TOTAL leg cramps during the heat of the afternoon on the steepest climbs. Motorists were wonderfully friendly. 98% of them waved, waited rather than turn out in front of you, and even stopped to ask if you needed help! The roadsides were incredibly free of broken glass, metal debris, and garbage. The road surfaces were very well maintained even in remote, rural farm country. Farmers were as friendly and helpful as they could be including the unsolicited offer of a meal and bed for the night! I highly recommend this ride.

Death Valley Fall Double Fini: # Elapsed Time: 15:40 Avg Speed: 12.77 mph Time in stops: Plenty!

8,900

If you've never been to Death Valley and you want to ride a Double, GO. It is one of the most spectacular and perhaps forbidding places on earth. The scenery is rich in it's own way. Plan extra days before or after the ride to sightsee. The weather this year was as perfect as weather can be for a ride at this distance with light to moderate tail and heads winds at times, interspersed with wonderful long periods of calm. Temps from high 60s to 80s and sun all day. The clear desert night sky is breathtaking with shooting stars, galaxies, and Mars jumping out now that it is as close to Earth as it gets every decade.
